# Five Everyday Habits That Make Rio Feel Like Home

Rio gets easier once you know the small routines locals take for granted. Here are five to start in your first month.

## 1. Find your padaria
Every neighborhood has a bakery where people stop for a pão na chapa and a coffee at the counter. Go to the same one a few mornings in a row. It is often the first place where someone learns your name.

## 2. Learn your feira day
Most neighborhoods have a weekly street market, the feira livre, on a fixed morning. Ask your doorman which day yours is. Go early for the best choice, or near closing for the "xepa", when stalls sell what is left for less. Bring your own bag, and try a pastel with caldo de cana.

## 3. Use the postos to meet on the beach
The beaches of the Zona Sul are marked by numbered lifeguard posts, the postos. Locals use them as addresses: "meet me at Posto 9". Pick yours, and you will start to see the same faces there.

## 4. Move early, outdoors
The beachfront and the path around the Lagoa fill with walkers and runners early in the morning, before the heat. On Sundays and holidays, part of the beachfront avenues closes to cars and becomes space for bikes and families. Check the schedule for your neighborhood.

## 5. Close plans with "combinado"
"Combinado" means "agreed". Use it to close any plan with a neighbor, a contractor or a friend: "Então sábado às dez, combinado?"
